Biography:
Nathan
Isayevich Altman has studied at the Art School in Odessa (1901-1907)
under Kostandi and Ladyzhensky, and at the Free Russian Academy of
Vasilyeva in Paris (1910-1912).
The
artist has taught at the SVOMAS (the State Free Workshops) in
Petrograd (1918-1920).
He was a member of IZO
(Fine Arts Section of the People's Commissariat for Education of the
Russian Republic), KOMFUT (theLeft Federation of
"Communist-Futurists") and INKhUK (Institute of
Artistic Culture).
From 1906, the artist has
participated in exhibitions including World of Art, Knave
of Diamonds, Union of Youth, L'Araignée group (Paris),
Young Europe (Paris), Association of Revolutionary Artists (Paris)
and others.
Altman has sketched and
sculpted portraits of Lenin from life. For the first anniversary of the
October Revolution (1918), he has decorated the Palace Square, Petrograd.
He has taken part in the execution of Lenin's plan of monumental
propaganda. The artist has also participated in the design of theatrical
production of "Mystery Buff" by Mayakovsky (1922). Altman
designed political ceramics (early 1920s).
The artist has gone to live and
work in Paris (1929-1935). He has return to Leningrad in 1936.
