Biography:

Iwan Puni has studied at the military-school, private Art School, St.Petersburg (1900-1908), and at the Academy Julian, Paris (1910).

He has traveled to Italy (1912).

After his return to St.Petersburg, Puni has become close friends with Malevich, Tatlin and Larionov and other futurism artists and poets.

From 1911 Puni has participated in exhibitions including Union of Youth, Salon des Independents, Tramway V,  0.10. and others.

He was a member of the Union of Youth group from 1912.

In 1913 the artist has married Xenia Boguslavskaya, also a painter (co-author of “Suprematist Manifesto” with Malevich, 1915). They have created cubistic and futuristic paintings.

Puni has traveled to Paris and has taken part in an exhibition there (1914).

A number of Puni's Indian ink drawings were exhibited in the Art-bureau of Nadezhda Dobychina (1915).

During the war the artist has illustrated children's books and worked in the “Niva” magazine.

After the October Revolution in 1917, Puni has returned to Kuokkala. The commissar of culture, Lunacharsky, was his friend, and a supporter of avant-garde artists. In 1918, the artist took part in creating posters and wall paintings for the  celebrations of May 1st and November 7th, the First Anniversary of the Revolution.

Puni has taught as professor at SVOMAS (Free Workshops – Academy of Arts) in Petrograd (1918), and then for several months at the High Art School, Vitebsk (1919). When Puni returned to Petrograd, the politic situation was so unfavorable, that in the end of 1919 he has illegally crossed the Finnish frontier together with his wife, and in the beginning of 1920s emigrated to Berlin.

In Berlin he made illustrations for newspapers and theatrical costumes, wrote articles and held a one-man show at the GallerieDer Sturm” (1921).

From 1924 the artist has lived in Paris.

In Soviet Russia the emigrant artists were buried in oblivion. That fate didn't pass over Puni. His name is unfamiliar not only to the people, but even to a large part of the artists.
