Biography:

Morgunov has studied at the Stroganov Art School, and in private studios of S.Ivanov and K.Korovin, Moscow (middle 1900s).

He was the illegitimate son of the landscape-painter A.Savrasov.

In 1900s was a close friend of K.Malevich and I.Kliun.

From 1904 Morgunov was a member of MTKh (Moscow Society of Artists) and participated in their and other exhibitions, such as Jack of Diamonds, Union of Youth (in Moscow, St. Petersburg/Petrograd, Kaluga), World of Art, Donkey’s Tale, Tram V, Magazine, Moscow Salon, Berlin 1922 and others.

The artis has traveled in Europe (France, Germany, Italy) in 1909-1910. Learned French Art from the end of XIX century, especially the painting of P.Cesanne.

In 1910s Morgunov was in the first rows of avant-garde painters, together with P.Konchalovsky, A.Lentulov, I.Mashkov, M.Larionov. At this time he has worked in the neo-primitivism style, but unlike Larionov's people-lubok, closer to the French fauvism. In 1913-1914 he has taken a great interest in kubofuturism and Malevich’s ideas “alogism of painting”, and together they shocked the public, when they appeared on the Kuznetzky bridge (Moscow avenue) wearing coats with red wooded spoons in their lapels.

Morgunov was a member of College IZO Narcompros (department of Fine Arts in the Commissariat of people education) in 1918, member of Proletkult (Proletarian Culture) and INKhUK (Institute of Art Culture).

Served as professor of painting in the State Free Art Shops (1918-1920), Moscow.

The artist has worked in purchasing and tariff commission (1920-1921) IZO.

In second half of the 1920s the artist's lot was typical for those years. He worked in the style of the social order, the socialistic realism. Avant-garde painting was heavily persecuted, and the artist had to discontinue it's practice.
