Biography:
Vasnetzov
has studied at the Ecclesiastical school in Viatka (1858-1862), at the
Ecclesiastical seminarian in Viatka (1862-1867), but left before the very
last year, the philosophy course.
In
1866 the artist has created 75 drawings for the A.Trapitzin book “Russian
proverbs and sayings”.
He
worked on his first paintings in 1867. Has moved to St. Petersburg, was
admitted to Academy of Arts, but studied the first year at the Drawing
school OPKh (Society for the Encouragement of the Arts). Studied at the
Academy of Arts (1868-1875) under P.Bassin, V.Vereshchagin and
P.Tchistiakov.
In
1870 Vasnetzov was rewarded the Big Silver Medal at the Academy of Arts.
He
left the Academy in 1875.
From 1874
the artist participated in exhibitions including TPKh
(Fellowship of Traveling Art Exhibitions – The Wanderers) in St.
Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev and Kharkov, World of Art, SRKh
(Union of Russian Artists), and religious painting exhibitions .
He has
visited France in 1876-1877, and Italy in 1885.
Was a
member of TPKh from
1878.
In
1879 Vasnetzov has moved to Abramtsevo (near Moscow), and lived in the
Akhtyrka village. He has created paintings on historical themes and
fairy-tales, designed decor for a home stage performance of Abramtsevo
circle “Snow-Maiden” (play by A.N.Ostrovsky).
He
has worked on wall-paintings for Vladimir's Cathedral in Kiev (1885-1886),
designed a chapel on the tomb of A.Mamontov in Abramtsevo (1891), made
sketches and originals of wall-paintings for a church in Gus-Khrustalny
(1896-1904), and sketches of mosaics for St.Alexander Nevsky in Warsaw
(1906-1911).
Vsnetzov
was raised into nobility by the tsar Nikolai II, “including all
descendants” (1912).
In
1917-1926 the artist created a series of paintings on Russian fairy tale
motifs.
The artist held one-man shows: 1903 in OPKH, 1912-1913 in Historical
Museum (Moscow).

Berlin (1922), 1924-1925 – in USA.
Vasnetzov died
in 1926 in his house in Moscow
