Biography:

Ivan Gavris has studied the Pedagogical Institute, and fought at the 1-th World War front.

He has enrolled in the Vitebsk Public Art School (1919), and has finished the Vitebsk Art-Practical Institute (1922) with the rank “master of fine arts in painting and drawing”.

He was a member of UNOVIS, and a member of the Creative Committee of UNOVIS.

In 1921-1922 the artist was a deputy of Vera Ermolayeva at the post of rector Vitebsk Art-Practical Institute. After Ermolayeva left for Vitebsk, he has attended to the duties of rector till break up the Institute in 1923.

In early - middle 1920’s Gavris was assistant to Kazimir Malevich, who has lead the teaching of systems of Cubism, Futurism and Suprematism. In the second half of 1920’s he has made many efforts to promote and develop the Belorussian art.

The artist has been incriminated of nationalistic activities and repressed.

Gavris has taken part in exhibitions: 1-th All Belorussian Art Exhibition (1925, Minsk); 2-th All Belorussian Art Exhibition (1927, Minsk); All Belorussian Exhibition of Painting, Graphics, Sculpture and Architecture (1930, Minsk); Autumn Exhibition of Artists of Belorussian SSR (1936, Minsk); “Belorussian SSR on 20 Years” (1937, Minsk).
