Biography:

Vladimir Evgrafovich Tatlin was born in a family of an engineer, who started his carreer in railways at the bottom, as a stoker. In 1892 he was sent to the US to study the railway system. He belived in technical education and wanted his son to aquire one. His son was rather more impressed with practical experience.
In his youth V.Tatlin moved back and forth between various jobs: he was a a captain's boy on a ship; a sailor; an icon painter's assistant; a prop-maker in the Opera. In between, he took occasional courses at art school. As a sailor he travelled to Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, the Near East and North Africa (1902-1904). His work as a sailor, with its demmand on discipline, its physical and diverse nature had a great influence over his entire life and carreer.
Tatlin has studied at MUZhVZ (Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture) under Serov (1902-1904) and Korovin (1909-1910), and at the Art College, Penza (1904-1910) under Goriushkin-Sorokopudov and Afanassyev.
From 1906 Tatlin participated in exhibitions including Donkey’s Tail, Union of Youth, Jack of Diamonds, The Store, “Tramvay V” and “O.10”.
L.Popova, A.Vesnin and N.Udaltzova, who were to become the future Constructivismartists, worked in his studio “The Tower” (1912-1915). He was a central figure of the Constructivism movement and produced reliefs and countre-reliefs from 1914.
Tatlin has served as artistic director for Glinka’s opera “A Life for the Tzar” and the play “Tzar Maximilian” (1912-1913).
He headed the IZO (Fine Arts Section of the People’s Commissariat for Education of the Russian Republic), Moscow (1918-1920).

The artist has taught at the SVOMAS (Free Workshops) in Moscow (1918-1920) and Petrograd (1919-1924); taught the basis of design; also taught at the department of theatre, cinema and photography in Kiev Art School (1925-1927); and at the VKhUTEIN (High State Artistic and Technical Institute) in Moscow (1927-1930). He was a founder and member of the GINKhUK (State Institute for Artistic Culture), Petrograd (1923). Worked on theatre designs in Ukraine.
Tatlin moved steadily from one task to another. He started with drawing and painting, then broadened it into relief and experiments with different materials. He then continued to industrial art, to design, to constuction, to architecture. He designed clothes, furniture, untensils, decorations.
In 1919 Tatlin has created the famous monument to the Third Internationale, an extraordinary example of the Avant-garde reaching into the realm of architecture.
In the early 1930s Tatlin designed and built the “Letatlin”, a human-powered flying mashine that created a sensation.
During later 1930s his work changed toward sombre, expressive, realist painting.
