Biography:
Marc Chagall studied at the studio of Pen, Vitebsk (1901-1907) under Kostandi and Ladyzhensky, at the Free Russian Academy of Vasilyeva in Paris (1906), at the School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, St Petersburg (1907-1908), at the studio of Zayderberg (1908) and at Zvantseva’s school (1908-1910) under Bakst and Dobuzhinski.
From 1906 he has participated in exhibitions including the Salon des Independants, the World of Art, the Donkey’s Tail, the Target.
He lived in Paris and worked in La Ruch (1910-1914).
In 1914 he held the first personal show at the Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin.
He returned to Vitebsk in 1914 and headed the Art School in 1918. Left the school under pressure from Malevich and his followers. Lived in Moscow (1920-1922).
Moved to Berlin, participated in the Exhibition of Three (Altman, Chagall, Shterenberg).
From 1923 lived and worked in Paris. His works were exhibited in Galerie Barbazanges, Paris (1924). The first retrospective was held in Basle (1933).
