Biography:
Alexandr Kuprin was born in the family of the district college teacher.
In 1889 he entered Borisoglebsk gymnasia, where he met his first tutor in art, N.Evsseyev. Later he continued to study in the Voronezh gymnasia (till 1896).
Kuprin has worked as clerk at the South-East railway (1896-1901), at the same time studying at the Voronezh tuition-free School of Painting and Drawing by the Amateurs of Art Society, under L.Solovyov and M.Ponomariov.

In 1902 he has gone to Petersburg, and entered the private school-workshop of academician L.Dmitriyev-Kavkazsky. Simultaneously, to earn his living, he made monumental mosaic panels and copies from pictures of Russian artists.
After moving to Moscow, Kuprin studied at the studio of K.Yuon (1902-1906), and at MUZhVS (Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture) under Arkhipov, Korovin and Pasternak (1906-1910).
In 1905 the young artist married Anastasia Polozantzeva, and they lived in friendship and harmony for over 50 years, until her death in 1957.
From 1906 Kuprin took part in all exhibitions of Jack of Diamonds. He was one of the founders (treasurer) of Jack of Diamonds (1910), together with P.Konchalovsky, I.Mashkov and V.Rozhdestvensky.
Kuprin created many wonderful still-lifes and landscapes of Crimea, of Moscow environs. In 1913-1914 he has traveled to Paris, North Italy, South France.
After Russian revolution the artist took an active part in the realization of Lenin’s Plan of Monumental Propaganda; he created panels for decorating of Moscow for revolution feastivities.
Taught at SVOMAS, college, Nizhniy Novgorod (1918-1919).

The artist has moved to Moscow, taught as professor (1922-1930) at Moscow VKhUTEMAS/VKhUTEIN (High State Artistic and Technical Workshops/ High State Art Technical Institute), and at MTI (Moscow Textile Institute,1931-1939).
From 1926 Kuprin worked on industrial theme of the Dnepropetrovsk and Moscow works and Azerbaijan oil-fields.
Member of OMKh (Society of Moscow Artists) from 1932.
The first personal show of Alexandr Kuprin was held in 1934, Moscow.
In 1954 he was chosen as an Associate member of Academy of Arts USSR, in 1956 was awarded the rank of Honored Worker of Arts of RSFSR.
Kuprin's second personal exhibition of was held in 1957, Moscow.
The artist Alexandr Kuprin died in Moscow (1960).
