Biography:

Pavel Basmanov is another artist loved and admired by contemporary professionals - art critics, collectors, fellow artists alike - yet little known outside this circle.

P.Basmanov. 1930s.

At first glance his career does not seem particularly brilliant. He knew no dazzling success, nor was he subjected to savage criticism. He was awarded no titles or honorary orders, yet his reputation is beyond reproach. Throughout his life he was guided by the certainty of what he would or would not, under any circumstances, do.

Basmanov was born and brought up in the far-off Siberia, in an Altai village, absorbing from infancy the endless expance of the Siberian steppes.

The artist has studied at the Altai industrial art workshops (1922) and then at the Petrograd industrial art college under V.N.Levitzki and M.Avilov (1922-1927). Here he mastered skills useful for the printing trade: poster arts, scripts and the production of side graphical art.

He has taken part in P.A.Mansurov's studio (1924-1925).

Basmanov has worked the children editorial office "Detgiz" under V.Lebedev's, where he illustrated the book "Igrenka" (play, game) by G.Kukolnik.

The artist was fiercely prootective of his natural independence, and never adopted any "way" of any of his teachers or contemporary gurus. The artist was however a member of the 4 Arts society (1927) and the Circle of Artists (1932), maintaining still his uniqueness and distinctive style.

Basmanov has only really began painting and studying painting in 1930. A decade of intense work followed, producing his "Stroll" series, his "Old Siberia" and "Studies". Many pieces were referred to as studies, implying that the artist wanted them to be seen in a certain way.

The "Stroll" series present dozens of works made and arranged in the same compositional concept, theme, motifs. At the heart of this inclination towards a cycle lies the the treatment of art as a means of expressing the condition of the artist's soul. The subject becomes a means of expressing feelings.

From 1935 he has taken part in exhibitions.

In 1934 the artist was arrested with regards to his connection with V.Ermolaeva and V.Sterligov. An ugly atempt of twisting his testimony was made by the authorities.

In 1940 a one-day exhibition "self-report" was held in the graphic department of the Leningrad Union of Artists.

In 1941-1945 the artist has fought in the World War II as a volunteer, and has come from Narva and to Berlin.

Upon his return from the front, Basmanov continued to work in illustration and printing graphics, and has taken part in exhibitions in Leningrad, Moscow, Kiev, Yerevan, Pskov and other cities.

The artist's first personal exhibition was held in 1983 in the Pushkin State Museum of Arts, Moscow.

Basmanov has died September 5th in St.Petersburg.
