LoftProekt "Etazhi" - December 28th 2010 till January 28th 2011
An exposition is opening on December 28th at the cultural center Loft Proekt ETAZHI, titled "Sign of Quality. An exhibition of achievements in Soviet design".
The word "design" has been forbidden in the USSR until 1987. But still design was born, lived and developed. The ideas of the first Russian designers (El Lissitzky, Alexander Rodchenko, Vladimir Tatlin, the Stenberg brothers) have greatly influenced world culture of the XX century. The VKhUTEMAS has been the largest school of Avant-garde design, one of the two cradles of the designer profession. Valentin Rostkov, Boris Hevzorov and Yuri Dolmatovsky, anonymous groups of engireers-constructors of railroad car building and aircraft factories have created wonderful prototypes of transport design. LOMO, Svetlana Mirzoyan, the Vaks school, Lazarev's experimental course, Alexander Zakharov, Vitaly Lagutenko, the VNIITE projects. In the 1950s-60s there were packaging, interiors, shop-windows, exhibitions, transportation, company logos, toys, stationary - we see design everywhere. Later, there were school of Alexander Ermolaev and Mikhail Labazov, live and environments raising the future classics of Russian designers.
The exposition will also present publications about Russian design, published at different times in the journal "Proektor". One may see at the exhibition all the journal issues for the three years of its existence, beginning with its first, "zero" issue published in 2007.
In addition, the exposition included remarkable examples of Soviet infographics and object design from the personal collection of the chief editor of the journal, Mitya Kharshak.
The exhibition presents signature objects of Soviet era by the key figures of "artistic construction":

fabric pattern and clothing sketches by Natalya Kiseleva (1930s);

lamp sketches and drawings by Abram Damsky (1940s-1980s);

reconstruction of textile by Varvara Stepanova and porcelain by Alexander Rondchenko;
-
technical drawings of experimental automobiles and ships by Alexander Zakharov;
-
object models by Svetlana Mirzoyan;
-
drawings of apartment layouts and interiors (1950s-1980s) from the MARKhI archives;
-
signature objects from Soviet automobile, motorcycle and bicycle construction;
-
daily life objects, toys from private collections;
-
Soviet gaming machines and other beloved heritage of USSR technical thought.
The exhibition appears as a living story of the design of a whole era in the history of our country, complete with documentary, object and video installations. A team of the best young designer of Moscow and St.Petersburg have created videos especially for this exhibition.
Lectures will be given by Alexander Zakharov, Svetlana Mirzoyan, Artyom Dezhurko, Vikenty Gryaznov.
All through the exhibition period rare documentaries and action films will be shown, encompassing the whole period from the beginning till the end of the XX century.
